To mark International Women’s Month 2022, we are looking at ways to improve gender equality in the workplace.

There has been much progress over the years, but there is still much to do. The benefits are clear; a diverse and gender equal workplace will help businesses to increase growth, innovation, helps with more diverse views and a more stable workforce. As there is always room for improvement to make your workforce more diverse here are a few suggestions to create a fairer and gender equal workplace.

Improve work life balance company wide
If you are looking to improve the male/female ratio in your organisation, the workplace should include a range of job opportunities to include flexible working/ part-time and job-share to attract a more diverse base of candidates including working parents who can share tasks equally.

Use skill-based assessments
As part of the interviewing process, HR departments should incorporate assessment-based interview techniques where candidates are scored on their abilities. Standardised questions will help to reduce unconscious bias.

Remove the gender pay gap
To encourage fairer pay across the board it is important to be transparent about wages – this will reduce the pay gap between men and women and encourage better salary negotiations.

Consider leadership roles for both women and men
As an organisation you should promote the fact that everyone can become a great leader regardless of gender – purely based on the attributes an individual can be bring to the role. Having a diverse leadership team helps encourage different views, which helps broader thinking across all operations of the business, improving efficiency.
